Training Visa Subclass 407

This visa allows you to take part in workplace-based occupational training activities to improve your skills for your job, area of tertiary study, field of expertise or in a professional development training program in Australia.

Sponsor

You must be one of the following types of organisations:

  • an organisation lawfully operating in Australia
  • Government agency
  • Foreign government agency
  • Religious Institution

You must be approved as a temporary activities sponsor (which usually lasts for 5 years), and provide occupational training, unless exempt. There are 3 types of occupational training covered by this visa:

  1. Occupational training required for registration – Workplace-based training is required to get occupational registration, membership or licensing, which is mandatory to work in that occupation in Australia or the home country.
  2. Occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation – Workplace-based structured training programs that are tailored to the training needs of the nominee, in relation to an occupation specified on the list of eligible skilled occupations, and involves a nominee with suitable recent and prior experience.
  3. Occupational training for capacity building overseas – Structured workplace-based training in Australia for up to 6 months for students who are enrolled in a foreign educational institution and need the practical training to earn their qualification, OR Structured workplace-based training which is supported by the government agency in Australia or the home country, OR Professional development programs of face-to-face teaching for overseas managerial or professional employees in a classroom or similar environment in Australia, supported by their employers.

1. What Are My Visa Conditions?

8102 – Not work other than in relation to study or training

You can only work if it is related to your course of study or training.


You can do volunteer (unpaid) work that is not related to your course of study or training if:


  • it is not interfering with your course of study or training;
  • is of benefit to the community;
  • it would not otherwise be undertaken in return for wages by an Australian resident, and
  • it is genuinely voluntary.

You can also take up a tutoring or research assistant role if:


  • it relates to the field of the occupational training programme;
  • it is beneficial to the training you are undertaking, and
  • the role is with your sponsoring university.

8104 – Work restriction: 40 hours a fortnight



You can only work up to 40 hours in a fortnight. A fortnight means the period of 14 days starting on a Monday.

8106/8107 – Work limitation

You cannot work in Australia unless it is relevant to the business or tasks specified in the visa application.

You must not stop working for your employer if you were nominated. You must not work in a different position, occupation or with another employer or for yourself.

You must hold a licence, registration or membership if it is mandatory to perform the occupation for which you were nominated.


If you stop working for the sponsor, your sponsor must tell the Department of Home Affairs. You will have 28 days to:


  • find a new sponsor;
  • apply for another visa;
  • leave Australia.

If you want to change an employer, your prospective employer must apply and get approval to be a sponsor.

8501 – Maintain adequate health insurance

You must have and maintain adequate health insurance for the whole of your stay in Australia.
