Be this age

You must be 35 years of age or under when you apply.

You can be under 50 years of age when you apply if you hold a Hong Kong or British National Overseas passport.

Have this visa

You must be in Australia (but not in immigration clearance) when you apply for this visa.

Subsequent entrants can be in or outside Australia when they apply.

We will only process your visa application if:

you are inside Australia and you hold an eligible Student visa not supported by the Defence or Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister
you held a Student visa within the past 6 months before you applied and you now have a Bridging Visa A or Bridging Visa B, granted on the basis of a valid visa application
you held a student visa within the past 6 months before your application and you now hold a substantive visa

Note: To be eligible for this visa you must have completed your course within 6 months of applying.

We can’t grant you this visa if we have previously granted you a subclass 485 or a subclass 476 visa as a primary visa holder.

Meet the Australian study requirement

You must have been awarded at least one associate degree, diploma or trade qualification in the 6 months immediately before applying and meet the Australian study requirement.

You can use more than one course to meet the 2 academic year component of the Australian study requirement, but each course used must be closely related to your nominated occupation.

On 25 November 2023, online study requirements returned to their pre-COVID state. However, online study undertaken during the COVID concession period (1 February 2020 to 25 November 2023) will continue to count towards the Australian Study Requirement.

The Department does not undertake pre-lodgement assessments of the Australian study requirement or any other visa criteria. Once a valid visa application has been lodged, a delegate will make an assessment based on the information available to them.

Have skills and qualifications that Australia needs

You will need to:

nominate an occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)
hold an associate degree, diploma or trade qualification closely related to that occupation
be assessed by a relevant assessing authority as having skills suitable for your nominated occupation.

Your application must include your nominated occupation. You cannot change your occupation after lodgement. Your qualification must be closely related to that occupation.

Your skills must be assessed by a relevant assessing authority as suitable for the nominated occupation.

You must provide your valid skills assessment with your application. If you don’t have a skills assessment, you must provide evidence that you have applied for one.

Skills assessments are valid for a maximum of 3 years, unless a shorter date is specified on the assessment.

Have this passport or this level of English language

To prove your English level meets the requirements, show us evidence that

You are a citizen of and hold a valid passport from one of the following countries:
- The United Kingdom
- The United States of America
- Canada
- New Zealand
- The Republic of Ireland.
In the 12 months immediately before applying for your visa, you must have scored one of the following:

Test	Score
International English Language Testing System (IELTS)	Overall score of at least 6.5 with a minimum score of 5.5 for each of the 4 parts
Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT)	Total score of at least 83 with a minimum score of 7 for listening, 8 for reading, 18 for writing and 16 for speaking
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic)	Overall score of at least 57 with a minimum score of 43 for listening, 48 for reading, 51 for writing and 42 for speaking
Occupational English Test (OET)	At least B for each of the 4 parts
Cambridge C1 Advanced test	Overall at least 176 with a minimum score of at least 162 in each of the 4 test components

Holders of British National (BNO) or Hong Kong passports must have scored one of the following in the 12 months immediately before applying for their visa:

Test	Score
International English Language Testing System (IELTS)	Overall score of at least 6 with a minimum score of 5 for each of the 4 parts.
Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT) TOEFL iBT tests that were completed between 26 July 2023 and 4 May 2024 will not be accepted for Australian visa and migration purposes. During this period, the TOEFL iBT test being offered was not an approved test.	Total score of at least 64 with a minimum score of: 4 for listening 4 for reading 14 for writing 14 for speaking.
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic)	Overall score of at least 50 with a minimum score of 36 for each of the 4 parts.
Occupational English Test (OET)	At least B for each of the 4 parts.
Cambridge C1 Advanced test	Overall at least 169 with a minimum score of at least 154 in each of the 4 test components.

Have adequate health insurance

Sign the Australian values statement

If you are 18 years of age or older, you must:

have read, or had explained to you, the Life in Australia booklet and
sign an Australian Values Statement that confirms you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws

Have no debt to the Australian Government

If you or any family members owe the Australian Government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.

Not have had a visa cancelled or a previous application refused
