Skilled Independent Visa Subclass 189 (Points-Tested Stream)

This visa lets invited workers with skills Australia needs to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What Should I Do Before I Can Lodge This Visa?

You will first need to lodge your Expression of Interest (EOI) on the SkillSelect website. Please ensure that you have:

  • Confirmed that your nominated occupation is on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL);
  • Received a positive skills assessment for migration purposes for your nominated occupation;
  • Received at least competent English scores by the time of invitation;
  • Gotten the minimum points-test score of 65 to submit the EOI.

You should not provide any false details, as you will need to substantiate any claims you make in your EOI (education, employment, etc.) when you receive your invitation.

2. How Long Does My EOI Stay Active For?

Your EOI will be in the system for 2 years. You can access and update the information at any time, depending on changes in your circumstances (new English scores, additions to your education or employment history, inclusion of additional dependents, etc.). However, when you receive an invitation to lodge your visa, your EOI will be frozen and you might not be able to update the EOI.

3. How Often Are Invitations Issued?

Invitations are issued regularly and automatically by the SkillSelect system to the highest ranking EOIs, subject to occupation ceilings.

If you are invited to apply for a visa you will receive an invitation from SkillSelect. You will then have 60 days from the date of invitation to make a valid visa application online before the invitation expires.

If you are not invited, you will not receive any notification on the progress. After each invitation round the Department will publish the lowest points scoring points test mark that allowed an EOI to be invited. This will give you an indication of your potential for receiving an invitation in future rounds.

4. What Happens After I Update My EOI?

When you submit your EOI, you will be placed in a queue, based on your points and the time of submission. The highest ranked applicants are generally invited first, while applicants of equal scores will be invited based on the order they received their points score (also known as the Date of Effect), and applicants with earlier dates receive invitations first.

You must update your EOI to notify the department of any claims you wish to amend. For any changes that affect your points score, you will receive an updated Date of Effect for your EOI.
